Messi hat trick in 5-0 win against Mallorca

Posted on October 30th, 2011 by admin

FC Barcelona soundly beat Mallorca last night in a 5-0 win at the Nou Camp, including a Messi hat trick that ended the Argentine’s goal drought. Isaac Cuenca scored his first goal for Barça and Dani Alves made it 5.

With Real Madrid winning their match, both sides were eager to see minnows Levante slip up this weekend; Osasuna beat them 2-0, ending their string of wins and allowing the two giants of Spanish football to leapfrog them into first and second place; Real Madrid are now on 25 points, with Barça on 24 and Levante on 23. It was fun while it lasted, but nobody really expected for the club to continue this run, impressive enough as it is.

Barcelona faces Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday (Champions League) followed by Athletic de Bilbao on Sunday.

According to CNN.com:

At the start of the second half Granada’s Jaime Romero was shown red, but despite dominating possession Barca could not grab a second, but they have gone seven games, a club record, without conceding a goal.

Barça’s next matc is on Saturday against Mallorca at the Nou Camp.

Real Madrid beat Malaga convincingly 3-0, while Levante continued their winning streak to take the #1 position – the first time they have ever been there in their 103 year history. According to San Antonio Express-News:

The modest club, which has the smallest budget in Spain’s first division, extended its record start to move one point ahead of Real Madrid and two points ahead of defending champion Barcelona.

The undefeated Levante, which two seasons ago played in the second division, had little trouble adding the lackluster Villarreal to its list of victims that includes Madrid and big-spending Malaga.

Barca cruise to victory [The Press Association]

Posted on October 20th, 2011 by admin

After Pep Guardiola warned that his side could not afford to be complacent against Viktoria Plzenon Wednesday night his side struggled to score despite high possession. Despite plenty of chances, the ball stubbonly refused to go in, however:

Andres Iniesta and David Villa scored at either end of a game in which the hosts could have got close to double figures had they taken their full quota of chances.

The result leaves Barça equal the top of Group H with AC Milan.

It would have seemed a bit harsh if Pep had blamed the injury on Pique playing for the Spanish national selection, surely?

FC Barcelona coach Pep Guaridola has refused to blame the Spain national squad for the muscle injury that will keep central defender Gerard Pique sidelined for the next two to three weeks.

Barcelona confirmed on Saturday that Pique, who lasted just eight minutes of their comfortable 3-0 win at home to Racing Santander, will be sidelined with a hamstring injury.
