Barça wins hard fought battle against Betis

Posted on January 16th, 2012 by admin

Xavi made his 400th Spanish league appearance on Sunday when Barcelona played Betis at the Nou Camp. Xavi put Barça into an early lead in the 10th minute followed up two minutes later by Lionel Messi.

However this early advantage was not to last; just before the break Betis scored their first goal and and just after half time they scored the equaliser. It wasn’t until Mario Alvarez, the Betis defender, was sent off for a second yellow that the balance changed. Xavi passed to Alexis, who put the ball into the back of the net in the 75th minute. Finally Messi scored Barça’s fourth goal of the match from the penalty spot four minutes before the final whistle after a Betis handball.

Barcelona remain five points behind Real Madrid, who they face in the Cops del Rey on Wednesday.

Barcelona rally to claim Clásico bragging rights [UEFA.com]

Posted on December 12th, 2011 by admin

Barcelona triumphed once again at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium on Saturday night as the biggest match on the football calendar took place in Madrid. According to the UEFA website:

Alexis Sánchez, Xavi Hernández and Cesc Fàbregas were on target as FC Barcelona recovered from an early setback to complete a 3-1 away victory against Real Madrid CF, whom they dislodged from the Liga summit.

Afterwards there was much talk from Madrid’s motormouth coach Jose Mourinho about Barça’s luck. However, surely even he can’t fail to see that Madrid’s only goal was down to pure bad luck for Barça when Victor Valdes made an uncharacteristic mistake in the first minute of play.

FC Barcelona top three points against Granada last night to put them back on top of the league – temporarily at least. While Granada should have been a fairly strightforward victory, football doesn’t always go the way it lok on papepr, and with Guardiola resting some key players the Catalans seemed to struggle to put the goal into the net, with the ball narrowly missing time after time. According to CNN.com:

At the start of the second half Granada’s Jaime Romero was shown red, but despite dominating possession Barca could not grab a second, but they have gone seven games, a club record, without conceding a goal.

Barça’s next matc is on Saturday against Mallorca at the Nou Camp.

Barça demolishes Osasuna

Posted on September 19th, 2011 by admin

After a disappointing two matches against Real Sociedad then AC Milan in which Barcelona drew, they came back with a vengeance on Saturday night at the Nou Camp, scoring eight goals against Osasuna. In what seems like it was the last day of summer, with the weather turning cold over the weekend, Messi scored a hat trick, while Villa scored two. And Cesc and Xavi added to the tally, as did an own goal from Osasuna to complete the humiliation.

The weekend couldn’t have ended better for Barça supporters, with Real Madrid stumbling against Levante. The giants lost 1-0 away, leaving Valencia to head the league table.

Barça draws against Real Sociedad

Posted on September 12th, 2011 by admin

After two goals from Xavi and Cesc put Barcelona into the lead just 11 minutes into the match against Real Sociedad on Saturday it looked like the match would go all Barça’s way. However, it wasn’t to be and with Real Sociedad staging a second half comeback, the two teams shared the points at the end of the match.

The result means Barça has slipped down the table, with Real Madrid in the top position. It’s early days though and plenty can happen between now and the end of the season; don’t read too much into one match.

Posted on November 30th, 2010 by admin

El Clasico is the biggest match on the planet, but last night FC Barcelona walked all over Real Madrid, who simply looked like a bunch of overpaid prima donas. FC Barcelona are now top of the league with a well deserved win.

2-0, Pedro (min 17)
3-0, Villa (min 54)
