Barça demolishes Osasuna

Posted on September 19th, 2011 by admin

After a disappointing two matches against Real Sociedad then AC Milan in which Barcelona drew, they came back with a vengeance on Saturday night at the Nou Camp, scoring eight goals against Osasuna. In what seems like it was the last day of summer, with the weather turning cold over the weekend, Messi scored a hat trick, while Villa scored two. And Cesc and Xavi added to the tally, as did an own goal from Osasuna to complete the humiliation.

The weekend couldn’t have ended better for Barça supporters, with Real Madrid stumbling against Levante. The giants lost 1-0 away, leaving Valencia to head the league table.

Barça draws against Real Sociedad

Posted on September 12th, 2011 by admin

After two goals from Xavi and Cesc put Barcelona into the lead just 11 minutes into the match against Real Sociedad on Saturday it looked like the match would go all Barça’s way. However, it wasn’t to be and with Real Sociedad staging a second half comeback, the two teams shared the points at the end of the match.

The result means Barça has slipped down the table, with Real Madrid in the top position. It’s early days though and plenty can happen between now and the end of the season; don’t read too much into one match.

Barça through to Champions League quarter final

Posted on March 9th, 2011 by admin

FC Barcelona secured their quarter final place in the Champions League last night after beating Arsenal 3-1 at the Nou Camp.

The Catalans absolutely dominated possession throughout and time and time again attached the Gunner’s goal. The first goal came from Leo Messi, three minutes into injury time before the break. However, the second half started badly when Busquets scored an own goal while defending the Barça goalmouth,

Although the odds started to go against Barcelona, it didn’t stop them from attacking. It was Xavi in the 69th minute and then two minutes later Messi from the penalty spot who secured the quarter final position for Barça.

1-0 Messi (min 48)
1-1 Busquets p.p. (min 52)
2-1 Xavi (min 69)
3-1 Messi (p) (min 71)

Barça trounces Real Madrid

Posted on November 30th, 2010 by admin

El Clasico is the biggest match on the planet, but last night FC Barcelona walked all over Real Madrid, who simply looked like a bunch of overpaid prima donas. Particularly poor was Cristiano Ronaldo, but the entire squad struggled to keep up with Barça and the end result was five nil to the Catalans.

FC Barcelona are now top of the league with a well deserved win.

1-0, Xavi (min 10)
2-0, Pedro (min 17)
3-0, Villa (min 54)
4-0, Villa (min 57)
5-0, Jeffren (min 91)

FCB beats Athletic – both teams down to 10 men

Posted on September 27th, 2010 by admin

FC Barcelona rose to take the second place in La Liga with just Valencia above them after beating Athletic Bilbao 3-1 away.

The match saw both teams down to 10 men by the end of the match, with David Villa being shown the red card with just a few minutes to go. Meanwhile Leo Messi continues to recover from his ankle injury and is included in the Champions League squad against Rubin Kazan on Wednesday.

0-1 Keita (min 55)
0-2 Xavi (min 74)
1-2 Gabilondo (min 89)
1-3 Busquets (min 92)

An article in The New York Times argues that the Spanish selection has two sides to it; a good side, typified by Xavi and David Villa, while Joan Capdevila and Fernando Torres represent the dark side in getting members of the opposite team sent off unfairly.

Comparing today’s Spanish squad with the 2002 Brazilian team the article says:

“Like Spain, that team had players who were happy to seek free kicks at the slightest sign of interference, as Rivaldo infamously did in a group game against Turkey. Maybe Spain has surmised that to win a World Cup, you need a full array of the footballing arts, including some of its dark ones; the truth is hidden somewhere behind Vicente del Bosque’s Great Barrier Reef of a moustache, and it isn’t emerging anytime soon. What we can reliably say is that the Spanish, with their careful manipulation of both ball and referee, are in the World Cup quarterfinals.”

Leo Messi back on form

Posted on May 3rd, 2010 by admin

Barça ensured it remained top of the Spanish league on Saturday night, with a 4-1 win against Villarreal. Messi was back on form with two goals, while Xavi and Bojan also made their mark.

On Sunday it was looking like Real Madrid might slip. However, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a last minute goal to ensure the Galacticos won 3-2. Madrid trail Barça by just a single point in the league, with just three matches to play.

Training ahead of Osasuna

Posted on March 24th, 2010 by admin

Yesterday’s training session ahead of the Osasuna match tonight saw Xavi and Abidal continue their recovery.

Nineteen players participated in the training session, the warm day contrasting with the snowy conditions of two weeks ago. One player looking unlikely to be fit is Pique, whose knee injury will almost certainly rule him out of the match.

The previous clash with Osasuna resulted in a 1-1 draw, but the team is down in 13th place and has won just 8 matches compared with Barcelona’s 21.

Rest from training after Stuttgart win

Posted on March 19th, 2010 by admin

While squad members who played the full ninety minutes against Stuttgart on Wednesday took a rest from training yesterday, the others resumed training, including recovery work for Busquets, Abidal and Xavi.

The entire squad will be training this morning ahead of Sunday’s match against Zaragoza. The session is due to start at 10:30 at the Ciutat Esportiva in Sant Joan Despí.
